This was more than just an assignment, it was my first attempt at bringing together motion design, web development, and real-time content control in one unified system. The goal was to create a fully functional digital signage interface for Durham College's Faculty of Media, Art & Design. something dynamic, modular, and easy to manage.I didn’t want it to be a static display. I wanted it to feel alive, always up-to-date, and visually engaging. whether it’s the weather, news, or motion ads playing across campus screens.
This jump site brings together everything I built for the digital signage project,
all in one place. From motion graphics and UI panels to real-time content tools and admin controls, every section links directly to a live version of the work.
The goal was to build a real digital signage system that actually works, not just a mockup. It had to look clean, update content live, and run smoothly without needing to touch code every time something changed.
On the bottom-left, I built three fullscreen SVG animations using GSAP. Each one is hand-coded, responsive, and loops smoothly. The system switches between them automatically inside an iframe.
On the bottom-right, I added a YouTube pane that plays three custom ads- one for Harley-Davidson, one for Red Bull, and one Durham PSA. I made them all in After Effects to feel like real campus promos.
I coded a live ticker that scrolls below the news pane. It pulls content directly from the admin panel and updates instantly when headlines are changed or reordered, no reload needed.
The top of the signage shows the current date and time using JavaScript. It updates live and auto-formats to match the retro-modern style of the layout.
This was the most important part. I
designed a system where everything news, weather, YouTube videos, even motion graphics folders can be changed or scheduled easily. It’s super simple to use. You just log in, update the text, change the date or order, and it shows up live on the screen.
I created all 18 weather icons myself in Illustrator to match the style of the signage. Tried to keep them simple, clean, and easy to read on screen. They cover everything from snow and fog to thunderstorms and high winds. Once done, I connected them to the admin panel so you can choose any icon for each day, and it shows up live.
This project gave me a chance to bring a bunch of things together. UI design, motion graphics, real-time updates, and system logic. I kept the whole thing simple and usable, but still dynamic enough to feel complete. It helped me understand how to design things that can actually be used, not just viewed. Definitely something I want to keep exploring more in future builds.
